Game of The Month Club: Devotion

For October’s game of the month, we will be playing Devotion.

Developed by Taipei-based studio Red Candle Games, Devotion is a first-person horror game inspired by East Asian folklore. The story, set in a Taiwanese apartment complex during the 1980s, follows a failing screenwriter, Du Feng Yu (voiced by Boren Cheng), his wife, retired singer Gong Li Fang (Pinling Chen), and their daughter, Mei Shin (Cindy Liu), who become increasingly involved with a cult after Mei Shin gets sick. With a focus on environmental storytelling and non-linear plot, Devotion received critical acclaim in the U.S. when released on Steam in February 2019.

However, a week after the game was released, Red Candle Games was forced to remove it from the Steam Store globally due to severe backlash from mainland Chinese players over controversial in-game artwork. The ramifications from mainland China's government later resulted in Red Candle's Shanghai-based publisher, Indieevent, having their business license revoked. The studio announced in July that they are giving up on bringing the title back to Steam and have no plans for a sequel or to license the intellectual property out.

Join us for a discussion on storytelling, folk culture, and the turmoil surrounding the game's launch.
